Payments may not be left at the Activity Desk, all funds must be received by the  Activities Director in person or delivered to the locked drop box located in the Town Center mailroom.

Safety Talk with Deputy Karen Hicks from the Sarasota Sherriff’s Office

Monday, October 14th  @ 1:30pm in the Town Center. Come learn a few safety tips that you can apply in your everyday life. Deputy Karen will talk on several topics including: distraction burglary, phone scams, and how to refer scams to the Federal Trade Commission where they can locate all the updates on scams and robo calls. She is also going to talk about ID theft and skimmers. Handouts will be provided and a giveaway. You don’t want to miss this!!!

Movie Night

Wednesday, October 16th @ 8pm. Showing “Green Book”- is a 2018 American biographical comedy-drama film directed by Peter Farrelly. Set in 1962, the film is inspired by the true story of a tour of the Deep South by African American classical and jazz pianist Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali) and Italian American bouncer " Tony Lip" Vallelonga (Viggo Mortensen) who served as Shirley's driver and bodyguard. The film was written by Farrelly, Brian Hayes Currie and Vallelonga's son, Nick Vallelonga, based on interviews with his father and Shirley, as well as letters his father wrote to his mother. The film is named after The Negro Motorist Green Book, a mid-20th century guidebook for African-American travelers written. Mother Pearl Sea Glass

 Monday, October 21st @ 1:30pm – 3:30pm in the Town Center. Come for some creative fun and go home with a matching set of Mother-of-pearl (MOP) jewelry pieces. A set consists of one pendant, one bracelet and a pair of earrings. You may select between an open back cuff or a link bracelet, and between French, stud or clip-on earrings. The MOP shell comes in natural and dyed green and turquoise chips and pieces. All shell pieces, tools and materials are provided.       

Susan Ross, instructor, has been teaching this class for 10 years in the local area.  She sells her jewelry at local boutiques.

ABC News Station Tour

Thursday, October 24th @ 12:30pm. Ever wonder what it takes to operate a News Station? Here’s your opportunity to get a first-hand experience. Come join this one-hour tour of the ABC News Station. The tour will begin at the Sales and Marketing department then on to the News Room with a short talk about Technical Operations. Afterward, you will be taken to the Digital Media Room where you will learn how they gather news and the function of Field Journalists and Master Control. The tour will finish in the studio where you will watch the noon news, weather, and  get to meet the Anchors and Meteorologist.

 Historic Venice Train Tour

Monday, November 4th @ 3:30pm (tour starts promptly at this time). The train depot, owned by Sarasota County, is the only surviving passenger station in the County. It was built in 1927 and renovated in 2002-2003, was central to the founding and development of Venice, Florida. Since November 12, 2003, a cadre of trained docents from the Venice Area Historical Society (VAHS) has provided tours of the Depot building and campus to visitors from around the world. This one-hour tour starts in the waiting room were on display are informative panels and exhibits developed by VAHS, illustrating both Venice history and Depot history. It is an interesting and entertaining story highlighting the five important themes of this city. The presence of VAHS at the Depot is a major effort in preserving and celebrating the Depot’s history and its historically significant architecture. Complimentary.

Energy Efficiency Workshop - Speaker Sara Kane from Sarasota County

Friday, November 8th @ 1:30pm in Town Center. Join us for this 1-hour workshop where you'll learn energy, water, and cost saving strategies at home. Attendees will receive a FREE “Do It Yourself Energy Saving Kit” (one per household) that includes ENERGY STAR LED light bulbs, WaterSense faucet aerators, a smart power strip, weatherization materials and outlet insulating gaskets, and other items so you can start saving. Attendees will also learn their low and no-cost tips, which combined with kits can save up to $560 per household per year on energy costs. 

Sara Kane manages the sustainability program for Sarasota County UF/IFAS Extension & Sustainability. She oversees sustainability improvements within government operations and the efforts to create a sustainable community across Sarasota County. Among her responsibilities are promoting energy efficiency to residents and businesses, ensuring sustainability improvements in county facilities and fleet, employee education and grant management. Sara was the Sarasota County Sustainability Outreach Coordinator for three years before being promoted to this position. She has also worked in the environmental field with the Sarasota Bay Estuary Program and Mote Marine Laboratory. Sara has a Masters in Global Sustainability with a concentration in water from the University of South Florida.
